The word is finally out - Primark is coming to the Middle East, with our franchise partner Alshaya Group! Today we unveiled our first four locations in the GCC region – in Kuwait and the UAE. First up is a store in Kuwait (pictured) which will open in October this year, followed by three stores in Dubai next year 🙌 This will take Primark to 19 markets globally. And that’s not our only international expansion news this week – yesterday we announced a €40m investment in our Italy store portfolio with five new stores planned and 700 new jobs 🇮🇹

Vox Cinemas to reopen The Avenues multiplex in Kuwait this month at 50% capacity

Vox Cinemas have confirmed plans to reopen its multiplex at The Avenues, Kuwait,at 50 per cent of its capacity later this month. Moviegoers will have to be vaccinated and registered on Kuwait’s Immune App to enter. The cinema arm of UAE-based Majid Al Futtaim, Vox Cinemas, confirmed that the reopening would be accompanied by strict adherence to government Covid-19 guidelines. Seating will now follow social distancing guidelines; therefore, seats next to, in front of, and behind the guest will be left empty. To minimize exposure, contactless payment options will be available as well as a queue-less experience. Face masks are mandatory for all guests and employees. Also, all workstations and countertops will be sanitized every thirty minutes, and employees will be required to wash their hands every twenty minutes as well as after handling food. Ali AlOqab, regional manager, Kuwait, Lebanon and Jordan, Majid Al Futtaim cinemas and Majid Al Futtaim leisure and entertainment said, “After being closed for more than a year, we’re extremely excited about reopening our doors at The Avenues and having the opportunity to reconnect with our valued guests. VOX Cinemas has been reopening cinemas across the region since May last year so cinemagoers can rest assured that we are exceeding recommended guidelines to ensure that families can enjoy the collective experience of watching their favourite films on the big screen with added peace of mind.” Vox cinemas have also reopened in other GCC locations such as Abu Dhabi. However, the safety protocols in that location are much stricter and are required to operate at a 30 per cent capacity as opposed to 50 per cent in Kuwait.

Alshaya Closing Down Some Restaurants

Over the weekend I was in Avenues for work (the mall is closed FYI) so I decided to walk around and see if it was true that Alshaya was closing down some of its restaurants. Inspired Edibles had posted a list on Instagram of the brands that were closing which included: 400 Gradi Alforno Blaze Pizza Bridge Water Chocolate Cafe COCO Castania Cleo Le Pain Quotidien P.F. Chang’s (Phase 1) Spontini Pizza Veranda Turns out it’s partially true. Other than Blaze Pizza and P.F. Chang’s, all the restaurants listed above had been closed down with their logos removed and the storefronts boarded up. I guess the two I’m gonna miss the most are Alforno and Spontini. When Alforno first opened I used to go there a lot with my family, and Spontini, well I kinda liked their pizzas even though I know a lot didn’t. But, if a giant like Alshaya has difficulty sustaining a restaurant during this difficult period in a mall they basically own, you can only imagine how other smaller businesses must be doing.
