Prime & Toast

Contract / Agreement at Seef Retail Strip

TKI wins Kuwait restaurants contract

Kuwait-based Sultan Group has roped in leading restaurant and hospitality consultants Thomas Klein International (TKI) to develop the interior concepts for its two upcoming restaurants in the country. Sultan Group said it is expanding its unique brand offering by opening a new Prime & Toast restaurant in Quibla area as well as new Wasabi outlet on the Kuwaiti Corniche. Prime & Toast is known for the quality of the produce used in their large selection of sandwiches, salads, soufflés, waffles and pancakes, and incorporates only the freshest ingredients and vegetables as well as the best prime USDA beef in their dishes. The Prime & Toast and Wasabi chain of restaurants is owned and managed by the Epicure Group, the food and beverage division of the Sultan Group. The newest Prime & Toast will be located in an existing restaurant location in Quibla and TKI will be re-designing the outlet to match the existing concept, said a senior official. “We have adapted the design slightly so that the vertical farming structure will be located directly adjacent to the window, allowing all the plants access to natural light,” explained Daniel During, principal and managing director of TKI. “The location of the vertical farming structure also means that the plants will act as a natural curtain to soften the incoming light into the restaurant,” During noted. “Furthermore, the additional core elements of the design such as the communal table and the blackboard ribbon around the restaurant will be respected and incorporated into the new design too,” he added. The new Prime & Toast in Quibla is expected to open in the second quarter of 2012. The Sultan Group said it will open a new Wasabi store on the Kuwaiti Corniche, in Point 5, which will offer diners uninterrupted sea views from its terraces.-TradeArabia News Service

Dubai-based TKI reveals all-black design for Kuwaiti restaurant

Dubai-based F&B consulting firm, Thomas Klein International (TKI), has revealed its concept design for the new Pintxos outlet in Kuwait. The all-black interior for the restaurant is the final design created by TKI and its Chicago architectural office, PS Studio. “The design is based around an all-black theme which creates a mysterious, cosy and enticing ambience,” said Daniel During, principal and managing director, TKI. The vibe of the restaurant is designed for socialising with informal seating and low lighting. An installation of over 2,000 felt cones, each with a fibre-optic light, will glow just above head level, creating a twilight effect. The fibre optics will be controlled from a central computer. “Interestingly the tables are actually individual pieces of hand-cut basalt, with free form felt ottomans for gathering around and sharing the dishes on offer,” said During. “Each table also weighs in excess of one tonne and are totally one of a kind,” he added. The bar is a solid piece of basalt, perforated with hundreds of small holes allowing light to shine through, creating a richly-textured focal point. The launch of Pinxtos, part of The Epicure Group, is planned for end of 2011 and will be located in the Quibla area of Kuwait City. Falafel & Company

Opening at Seef Retail Strip

Falafel & Company now open

I just passed by and had lunch at Falafel & Company and it was great. I had the double impact and the midnight shawerma. Double Impact is beef shawerma with fried onion strings, cheddar cheese, bbq sauce, jalapeno sauce and lettuce. The midnight shawerma is a beef shawerma with cheddar cheese, grilled fresh onions, lettuce and their special midnight sauce. Incredible stuff and for only 450fils each. For those of you who are not as adventurous, you can have your shawerma “normal”. They’re located on the Gulf Road opposite Seif Palace from 9AM to 6PM

Falafel & Company

I put my new “healthier diet” aside for the night and passed by Falafel & Company. Me and my friends were invited to try out the place (free food!) and I think I over ate a bit. I tried the chicken shawerma with chipotle tahina sauce, their meat shawerma, their 5 kinds of falafels (Lebanese, Egyptian, Spanish, Italian and Special), a white lawn sandwich (Lebanese falafel, with cucumber, labneh sauce, and olives), fries, crispy onion strips and topped it all off with a bowl of mohalabia. I am going to have a hard time sleeping tonight! The BuzBerry guys were also there and so was Marzouq. I didn’t take many pictures but I know they did. Here is a link to BuzBerry’s post with pictures [Link] and once Marzouq posts his pictures up I will update this post. Falafel & Company will be opening up soon, I think next week but not sure. Update: Here are Marzouqs pictures [Link]

Crostini

Upcoming Opening at Seef Retail Strip

Crostini

I was hanging with my friend at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf... It was nice and quiet, I almost dozed off on the couch when my friend suggested that we try the new Italian restaurant, Crostini, near by! In search of the best Spaghetti Bolognese, I said yes instantly! Crostini is the the New Italian restaurant I mentioned in my previous post. I thought why not try this new place! We were greeted at the entrance by a man who was standing outside (who turned out to be one of the owners of the restaurant). Basically, the restaurant is divided into three sections, the inside dine-in, the garden, and the terrace (which was under construction). I knew what I wanted to have, a spaghetti bolognese, my friend wanted a Pizza Margarita! It was the appetizers that we wanted to think about and we ended up picking two; Three Amigos and Parmesan Crostini (you gotta try something with that name eh?)... My friend asked for a diet coke, whereas I personalized my lemon with mint juice to include orange as well (I so needed vitamin C! LOL) and it was done with NO problem at all... The appetizers arrived and they were so good, specially the Three Amigos! Just to give you an idea of what they were, the Parmesan Crostini looked like a crispy pizza with parmesan, olive oil, and oregano... The Three Amigos were five mini tortillas topped with Monterey Jack cheese, salsa, sour cream, and Guacamole. The spices used were about right, not too funny and too strong... and also fresh, smelled and tasted good! Just before our main courses arrived, the owner approached us and asked if everything was OK, and it was. We had a quick chat with him.. turned out I have heard of him, Mr. Khaled Al Gharaballi, when I was studying in Colorado. He used to live there and owned a restaurant called Calvin's in Denver... our main courses arrived and so he decided to let us eat. I tell you, my spaghetti was so GOOD my friend had to dig in with me. Her pizza was good too, it had some cheddar cheese which gave it a twist too! I am usually picky with spaghetti bolognese, but that one was about right, it was so fresh, it smelled so good, and the sauce was thick enough to my taste (not too watery, not too dry)... I kept digging in and letting my friend too (if you know me, I usually dont approve of sharing, but I also wanted to try her pizza you know! :-P) Mr. Al Gharaballi came back with his partner and answered few of my/our questions... Why Italian! There aren't that many Italian restaurants in Kuwait, the idea of opening an Italian restaurant was there, but it needed a lot of thought.. you need the right name and the right location! For me, I think they picked THE location to open an Italian restaurant :-) That area is awesome with all those shops/restaurants opening... next to the merchant market (where shay wa na3na3 is) and in front of the Seif Palace, and the friendly neighborhood (Slider Station, Burger Hub, Pink Moon Boutique...etc).... The terrace in the restaurant is a PLUS! I loved it and I cant wait till they open it... Yes, I got the privilege to take the tour ;-) Also, Mr. Al Gharaballi also explained to us how they came up with the name "Crostini". Crostinis are thin slices of crispy/crunchy bread with a variety of many toppings. The logo as you can see from the pic posted is a sliced Crostini with some missing slices to form the letter C! Its very Italian and very original! I like the creativity in their name! I love their location, and they are also working on their own parking area since its always packed there! I felt the freshness of their ingredients and how lightly it was cooked! Nothing was too oily.. the pizza bread, and the crostini were crispy! I will definitely go there again to try out new items on their menu! I strongly recommend this place to all Italian-food-lovers in Kuwait :-D Favoloso!! Squisito!!

Burger Review: The Burger Hub

The Burger Hub is another one of those places I never tried because I absolutely hated their branding. With places like Burger Boutique and Slider Station, the bar has been raised when it comes to the design of burger joints in Kuwait and the fact that Burger Boutique and Slider Station are local creations just like Burger Hub means there is no excuse for bad design. If we put aside the ugly logo, placemats and the confusing menu, whats up with the interior design? Its just really awful, and the bathrooms are even worse. The whole thing put together just makes it look like Burger Hub were trying really hard to be different and stylish but the result just makes them look like wannabes. Having Slider Station a few doors down isn’t helping either. One thing they got right and the most important aspect of this review though was their burger. According to their placemat their most popular burger was the La Rose Burger which consists of the beef burger covered with caramelized onions, mushroom sauce and swiss cheese. So I placed an order for that with a side order of fries and waited. When the burger arrived I wasn’t impressed by the presentation. It came in a small metal pan that had white paper on the bottom and the burger on the top which looked pretty cheap. I really came into the place already with a negative impression and nothing there was really helping me change my mind until I started eating the burger. Wow what a shock. Everything about the place was telling me this burger was going to suck but it was just delicious. When I first saw the bread I expected it to be hard but it turned out to be very soft and although the burger was really juicy, the bread never got soggy. The beef patty also tasted great while the mushroom sauce wasn’t overdone and the cheese was just right. I couldn’t believe I was not only liking the burger but loving it. But not all is perfect, before I could really start to enjoy the burger I had already finished it. I guess for a 12 year old girl on an Atkins diet the burger is actually a good size but for me I wished it was ever so slightly bigger. I also wished the onions were more caramelized since some of it still tasted raw. Overall though the burger was really impressive and thats why I am giving it a 4 out of 5 which actually ties it in first place with their neighbors, Slider Station. I will definitely be going back again, they have a really large collection of burgers which I think I am going to have fun going through. Now if only they can revamp their identity.

Slider Station

Opening at Seef Retail Strip

Review: Slider Station

Slider Station is a new restaurant that opened up around a month ago. Its a local creation by the same guys behind Burger Boutique. I passed by yesterday night with Nat and a friend for dinner and I left the place extremely impressed and I will tell you from now that I gave the place a full 5 out of 5 rating without the slightest hesitation. Since the place is pretty small you need to call ahead to reserve a spot. We called on Friday to reserve 3 places at the bar for Sunday night. I had seen the actual location before it was built, I saw sketches on how it would end up looking like and I even so pictures of the interior taken by various other bloggers after Slider Station was launched but even though, when I got to the place I was astonished. Pictures really don’t do the place any justice. I think its currently one of the nicely designed places in Kuwait, everything about it from the walls, to the chairs to the food conveyor belt, everything was paid attention to. The food conveyor belt, thats the reason we asked for the bar seats. One of the coolest things at Slider Station is the large u-shaped bar taking up the majority of the space on the ground floor. Its surrounded by very comfortable seating and the bar has a built in conveyor belt. Each group at the bar is assigned a number and they serve your food by rolling it out on the conveyor belt. For example our number was 1 so all the dishes that came out on the conveyor belt with the number 1 in front of it was ours. Its a nice gimmick that is both practical and fun. The music that was being played was really cool and their choice of plates, cutlery and glasses were just spot on. slider station I could talk more and more about the actual look of the place but it would all mean nothing if the food wasn’t any good. The most popular burgers at Burger Boutique are the sliders. Sliders are mini burgers simply put and what Slider Station did was take them to a different level. I don’t know exactly how many different sliders they have but I think they were over 15 variations ranging from beef, to chicken to fish. Unlike in Burger Boutique where sliders come in groups of 4, at Slider Station, each slider order is just a single slider. This makes things A LOT more fun since you could mix and match sliders as you wish. I personally ordered the Roast Beef slider, the Wagyu slider with mature english cheese, the Caribbean crab slider which is a crab burger with a delicious mango sauce, and finally a Hammour slider. For appetizer we had two types of fries, the regular and the extra thin and crispy one. We also had buffalo wings and duck quesadillas. Everything was just really good, the presentation, the flavor, the buns, it was just perfect. There wasn’t anything I could find wrong with the place but I hadn’t ordered the dessert yet so before I could give it a final score I had to try their chocolate pudding. As you could already guess, I must have liked the dessert or else I wouldn’t have given the place a full five out of five. Yes, the chocolate pudding rocked! So, good food, good atmosphere, good variety and good prices. I don’t know of any other restaurant in Kuwait that deserves a better rating. Final score five out of five. To get reservations call 2465047. They are open from 7PM to 11PM. You can also check out their blog by going to www.sliderstation.com Pictures taken from SliderStation.com note: I forgot to mention, they are located on the Gulf Road between Seef Palace and the House of Parliament.
